This 2-day course will contain what you need to become certified as an American Red Cross instructor for lay responders and teach your own classes!

Maximum Class Size: 10
Prerequisites: Students must possess a current Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Certification from the American Red Cross or another accepted organization: American Heart Association, National Safety Council, ASHI, ECSI, or Canadian Red Cross (please verify if you are not sure) as well as an online pre-training that will be assigned at the time of enrollment.

Course Overview

In order to complete the course, students must arrive with prerequisites complete and be in attendance from start to finish during both days of training.  Instructor candidates will also need to successfully demonstrate teaching techniques discussed in the class during two mandatory practice-teaching sessions.  There is a mandatory written test, which must be passed with a score of 80% or better.  Course completion provides a certification as an Instructor good for 2 years.

Topics Covered In This Class

  • Program Introduction – Once prerequisites have been verified, the instructor candidates will be provided with an overview of the Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED curriculum, equipment and classroom requirements, explanation of instruction manual layout, and background information regarding the science and benchmarks used for classes.
  • Education Theory – Building off knowledge covered in the online pre-training, instructor candidates will review and practice concepts of learning and facilitating student discussions.
  • Skill Session and Scenario Instruction – Instructor candidates will go over and tools used for teaching and assessing skills, how to observe and evaluate student performance, and how to coach and prompt students with effective positive and corrective feedback during instruction sessions and review scenarios.
  • Practice-Teaching Sessions – All instructor candidates must complete three practice teaching session in a mock class, using Red Cross materials and covering previously discussed topics: one discussion, one skill session, and one scenario.
  • Red Cross Programs – The wrap-up of the instructor course will go into detail regarding courses available to teach under the First Aid/CPR/AED program, how to utilize the American Red Cross Learning Center, report activity, and award certificates.
